Medal Metal Coin Craft

Whether you're an avid collector or just have a special coin in mind, this craft is sure to bring out the creative in you. With a few simple supplies you can create a coin that will be the envy of all your friends and family customized challenge coins.

Step 1: Design the Medal

The first step is to create a life-sized paper drawing of your desired coin design. This can be done by hand drawing or designing on a computer. Once the design is complete, print it out exactly as you want it to look with any images, lettering and numbers. Make sure to include a circular outline -- you can trace an existing coin or use the circle tool in an image editor medal metal coin craft.

Next, make a mold for your coin using earthenware clay. Pull a lump of clay about the size of a ping-pong ball and soften it in your hands, then flatten one edge against your work surface. Place your coin drawing on this flat area and press gently against the clay to make a shallow impression of the image, including the circular outline.

After the clay has dried fully, coat the new mold with a fine layer of cooking oil to keep your coin from sticking to it. Let it dry fully before you add your metal clay.

Step 2: Make the Medal

Once you've completed your metal coin, you can oxidize it to give it an aged patina. There are a few ways to do this, but I recommend using liver of sulfur, which is excellent at creating an aged oxidation on brass. You can also hard boil an egg and smash it up to create a similar effect.
